No concertgoer would expect to return to the festival the following night to hear a performance that equalled Jablonski's achievement. But with Alexander Gray, Oskar Morawetz, Sidney Harth and Janet Scott centre stage, Sunday's recital in the Margaret Greenham Theatre offered exactly that.

This was the first time in 20 years that Morawetz, one of this country's most distinguished - and, more important, most performed - composers, has performed on the piano in public.

No nervousness

Those years had little effect on his stance at the keyboard before a packed house. No nervousness or undue tension spoiled the furious attack he made on the incredibly difficult piano parts to his five songs on the program. With Gray as his able partner, they gave a powerful display of musical virtuosity at its near-limit.
