Reluctant pianist a stunning success

Oskar Morawetz is widely acknowledged as one of Canada's most distinguished composers.

But he's also an exceptional pianist - a fact known only to his close friends because of Morawetz's reluctance to perform in public.

But recently at the Banff Festival of the Arts, he did make a public appearance as a musician - for the first time in 20 years - and the result was a stunning success.

Morawetz was coaxed into presiding at the piano for singer Alexander Gray's performance of the composer's own Five Songs For Baritone.

Gray's emotionally charged singing and Morawetz's eloquent piano contribution left a capacity audience at the Banff Centre enthusiastically clamoring for more.
