This Winning Composer Prefers To Be Different
Toronto composer Oskar Morawetz, just named the $1,000 winner of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra's piano concerto contest, has firm views on a composer's duties.
"He should not compose for a vacuum, as so many do," Dr. Morawetz said last night. "One can be modern but one should never lose touch with the audience, and by that I mean the intelligent musical members of it.
