Local Symphony Commission To Torontonian
The Montreal Symphony Orchestra announces that the Toronto
composer Oskar Morawetz has been chosen as the sixth recipient of its annual
competition for an orchesetral work by a Canadian composer. This year, composers
were requested to submit a work for piano and orchestra. The prize-winning work,
a Concerto in three parts, played without interruption, will be given its world
premiere performance by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under the direction of
its Musical Director Zubin Mehta, at the subscription concerts of April 2 and 3
in Plateau Hall. The name of the solo pianist will be announced shortly.
For his work, Mr. Morawetz will receive a cash prize of $1,000.
The performance will be heard on the Trans-Canada and French networks of the
Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
Other Canadian composers chosen in previous years were Harry
Somers, Jean Papineau-Couture, Francois Morel, Alexander Brott and Roger Matton.
