Memorable premiere of the Piano Concerto by Morawetz
[...]
Morawetz's Concerto No.1 for Piano and Orchestra
is a splendid work, one of the best Canadian compositions heard by our orchestra
for many years. I shall not attempt to analyse the technique or style of this
work as I don't feel that it is necessary to take into account such
considerations in appreciating its values. I shall only summarize my impressions
by saying that this work has personality, yes, a very strong personality, making
it an important work which should soon take its place in the repertoire of
concert pianists.
The concerto was performed magnificiently by the young
pianist, Anton Kuerti, who will certainly not regret having memorized it, for he
will surely play it countless times in the future if the international music
life relies on some intelligence, and the concerto will have each time the same
success as that one so well deserved yesterday evening.
