Toronto Concerto Hailed In Montreal
Toronto composer Oscar Morawetz has scored a triumph in Montreal, with the world premiere of his prize-winning first piano concerto.
The composition was the winner of a $1,000 prize which also entitled it to be played by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. The soloist in the performances on Tuesday and
Wednesday was Anton Kuerti, who replaced another soloist and learned the entire concerto in only 21/2 weeks.
Montreal critics were
unanimous in their praise, and the audience so enthusiastic that composer Morawetz was called back for six bows.
