Winning Work Not Shelved
Oskar Morawetz, who this year was awarded the $1,000 prize for a
commissioned work composed for the Montreal Symphony Orchestra is going to have
it played shortly by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. When Conductor Walter
Susskind heard a tape of the local premiere performance, he thought it was
Morawetz's best work. Local reaction showed more enthusiasm with bravos and
cheers than for any of the five previous commissioned works. Even the fine
soloist, Anton Kuerti, has written Dr. Morawetz from New York that he hopes to
program it next season. This is really impressive because composers are not
always so fortunate.
