The concerto consists of three movements played without interruption.
The first movement, marked allegro non troppo, is written in free sonata form
with alternating dramatic and lyrical themes.
The second movement is reflective in mood; principal themes are stated, which
are then combined in a way that is suggestive of a passacaglia. The themes are
balanced between the piano and orchestra in traditional concerto style.
The final allegro is predominantly fast and gay with much rhythmical variety.
Here the pianist is afforded considerable technical display.
