In 1976, the HPO under Boris Brott commissioned a work for harpist ERICA
GOODMAN. Sommerville proved his personal menschekeit by crediting Brott with
this and his other contributions to the local cultural scene. Last night, Miss
Goodman returned to again perform the harp concerto by Oskar Morawetz; born in
Světlá but moved to Vienna, then Paris- always just a step ahead of the nazis;
he escaped to Canada in 1940. This particular piece is a demonstration of his
melodic and rhythmic vitality as well as his sincerity & expressive depth. A
highly challenging work- the demands on the orchestra and especially the soloist
are gargantuan. Miss Goodman had to perform as many clutch & brake shifts as a
F-1 driver at the Mille Miglia! The piece incorporates some unique and esoteric
manipulations including the assistance of her tuning fork, thus is a fabulous
platform for demonstrating her incredible technique.
