The concert began with Oskar Morawetz's masterwork of texture and expression,
From the Diary of Anne Frank.
It is an emotional pressure-cooker, orchestrated with genius.
Its dark bass sonorities are rich without sacrificing colour, and clear in a
tonal range where it is difficult to avoid producing mud. Tintner paced it with
intuitive sensitivity, and Stilwell sang it beautifully.
