Morawetz composed the Fantasy, Elegy and Toccata in 1956 and premièred
it January 19, 1958, at a concert given by the Canadian League of Composers.
Since that time it has been performed by many prominent pianists including Mario
Bernardi who was the first to perform it on the Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation and by Anton Kuerti who gave the extremely successful U.S.A.
première in New York's Town Hall on Feb. 22, 1962.
The Fantasy is in free sonata form. The main themes of the exposition
are of a lyrical character, but in the development section and in the coda the
first theme receives a rather dramatic treatment.
The Elegy is in ternary form. The first part is slow and almost
dirge-like in character; the middle section is quite animated in tempo and in
dynamics. The excitement gradually subsides and is followed by a shorter but
much more dramatic version of the first elegaic section.
The technically demanding and agitated Toccata keeps its tension by
means of a continuous motion of eighth notes and many changes in time signature.
After a prolongued crescendo, a few percussive chords in the lowest register of
the piano interrupt the motion and bring the Toccata to an abrupt and vigorous
end.
