This famous cycle of Dvořák written in its original form for solo voice and piano, was transcribed by Morawetz for a capella choir in 1981. It is dedicated to the memory of Terry Fox and all the royalties from this composition are donated by the composer to the Terry Fox fund for research of cancer. The world premičre by the Vancouver Chamber Choir was given in September of 1982 at the opening celebration of the
church of Westminster Abbey, in Mission, B.C.
It was attended by many cardinals from abroad, the parents of Terry Fox and
by Oskar Morawetz.
Morawetz says about this work: "It was a much more difficult task to do this transcription than to write a new original work. I made not only a new translation from my native tongue, Czech, but I had to find also words from
the same Psalms which Dvořák used which would be appropriate for the piano interludes. And another problem was to find vocal treatment for the many purely pianistic figurations of the piano part, without changing the harmonic
language of Dvořák."
