In sharp contrast to a good deal of the ill-manipulated dodecatonality in last night's program was the group of four songs for baritone by Oskar Morawetz, which were most fetchingly
sung by James Milligan.
Mr. Morawetz is a tremendously exciting composer; even his faults are mostly excesses of virtue, as when his enormously dramatic climaxes occasionally spill
over into melodrama. I imagine that two of the songs we heard last night - Elegy and Grenadier
- were as fine as anything of their kind ever produced in this country.
