them all as soloist, Yo-Yo Ma.

And in Yo-Yo Ma, who earlier this month played the same work with the New
York Philharmonic under Kurt Masur's direction, he found a mourner who, in his
approach to the music, never allowed grief to overcome essential dignity.
It was good to see the composer, now celebrating his 75th birthday year,
given a solo bow. Ma, a musician with an admirable sense of priorities, led the
applause.
