The concert opened with Oskar Morawetz's Overture To A Fairy Tale.
Morawetz, who was in the audience and received the delighted applause of the
audience after the performance, points out it depicts no actual fairy tale but
captures the genre's spirit.
It sure does. It is a wonderfully crafted work with rich textures and colors,
rhythmic liveliness and subtlety. Scenes of ballet or film simply force their
way into the mind's eye from the music's crystal clear picture painting. Once
more, Gunzehauser's insights and the orchestra's playing were all that could be
desired.
