Piping Down the Valleys Wild
from "Three songs to poems by William Blake"

In order to keep the pastoral simplicity of the conversation between a shepherd and a child, Morawetz chose a form which may seem close to a folk song. But the many subtle changes in time signature, rhythm, texture and the unusual modal cadences make this poem an art song of the highest order which follows very closely the words of the text.
