Canadian Job Performed at Hermitage

When the Little Symphony opens the second half of its season on Jan. 25 at the Hermitage, Cote des Neiges, concert-goers will have the opportunity of hearing the first performance in Montreal of the Serenade for Strings by Oscar Morawetz, conducted by George Schick.

Morawetz' compositions are more and more in demand in this country for radio and concert programs. His works have been broadcast many times over the Trans-Canada Network and the short-wave services of the CBC. His writing has received recognition not only in Canada, but in European countries, and his Carnival Overture was on of the Canadian compositions represented at the Olympics in London last year. For two successive years Morawetz won the prize awarded annually by the Composer and Authors Association for the best Canadian composition.

Czechoslovakian by birth, Oskar Morawetz came to Canada in 1940 to continue his career in music. He had received his training at the conservatories of Prague, Vienna and Paris. Shortly after his arrivel [sic] in this country, Morawetz' sound training and fine talent were recognized by Toronto University which conferred upon him the degree of Bachelor of Music. He is now a member of the staff of the Toronto Conservatory where he teaches composition and score reading.
