In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the premičre of Dvořák's New World
Symphony, Sony Classics sponsored an all-Dvořák concert to take place in the
Smetana Hall in Prague exactly one hundred years after the symphony's American
premičre. The high profile artists included cellist Yo Yo Ma, who
suggested Morawetz to Sony Classics as the person to arrange two Dvořák works
for violin, cello and orchestra, allowing Mr. Ma, violinist Itzhak Perlman,
and Seiji Ozawa conducting the Boston Symphony to perform together.
Morawetz chose to arrange Dvořák's Humoresque in G, and Slavonic Dance
in E- for the occasion. The concert was broadcast on PBS TV, and Sony
Classics later released the concert on video and CD.
