The first half concluded with Oscar Morawetz's Sonata for Clarinet and Piano.
Written in 1981, the work is not radically modern but is not what one would
classify as neo-romantic, either. What one may definitively say about this
music, however, is that it radiates an intense spirit, both in its extroverted
and introverted moments. The playing of Ms. Kustanovich was stunningly effective
in its elemental, driving power, while the work of Julian Milkis aptly
demonstrated why he is so highly regarded and sought after in international
concert circles.
