Morawetz's highly emotional setting of one of the most moving parts of Anne
Frank's famous diary - called Who Has Allowed Us To Suffer So Terribly Up Till
Now? - remains as effective as ever. It's not that the music, by itself, is so
overpowering, but rather that Morawetz has captured the special sense of anguish
coupled with hope in an entirely felicitous way, neither detracting from nor
bloating Anne's pure and simple vision. The Festival Singers cope with this sort
of dramatic music very well, restraining the theatrics ad heightening the
various moods.
