Composer Shares Applause At Thrilling Free Concert

There was a flurry of excitement midway through The Star Free Concert in Walmer Road Baptist church last night.

Mary Syme, piano soloist of the evening, announced she was going to open her second group of numbers with a composition by the young Toronto composer, Oscar Morawetz "who," she told the audience, "in my humble opinion is not just one of the better young Canadian composers, but one of the better Canadian composers."

Then she announced Morawetz, whose music has been played, in leading Canadian, U.S., European and Australian centres, was present and asked him to rise and take a bow. The audience greeted him very cordially, then settled back to hear a sample of his work, called simply "Scherzo."

It held attention because it was a work of engaging imagination and sure craftmanship, and Miss Syme played it with deepest sympathy.

During the ovation the shy Morawetz walked to the front of the church to congratulate Mary Syme as his eloquent interpreter.
