Awards Made to Composers

The Canadian Performing Right Society has announced the awards in connection with its second annual competition for Canadian composers of matured technical accomplishment. These awards consist of five cash prizes of $100 each. This year 38 manuscripts were submitted which called for weeks of expert examination. They embraced string quartets, works for small orchestra, concertos, two-piano compositions, choral and organ works, and even a ballet suite. Under the rules of the competition, the adjudicators make no attempt to fix rank of merit. They select what in their judgment are the best compositions and make the awards on the basis of equality.

Awards are as follows:

Alexander Brott, 2705 Maplewood Ave., Montreal, for string quartet entitled "Of Our Day."

Robert Fleming, 802 King St., Saskatoon, Sask., Sonata for violin and piano, entitled "Bella, Bella."

Bandsman Gayfer, with Canadian Army Overseas. Home address, 879 Gladstone Ave., Toronto, string quartet in A minor.

John Maurice Lowe, Olympic View, White Rock, B.C., Irish rhapsody for two pianos.

Oscar Morawetz, 424 Rosemary Rd., Toronto, string quartet in F minor.
