The Suite was commissioned by a well-known personality in the business world,
Donald McParland, the designer of the Labrador Falls hydro plant. The work was a
birthday gift for his wife Connie and it was premièred by Anton Kuerti in
Montreal in December 1969. Tragically, McParland was killed a few days before
the première in a fatal airplane accident when returning from Labrador Falls
with other executives of his firm. Kuerti has performed this composition many
times since, not only in Canada, but also in Europe.
The first movement, Prelude, is a free fantasy which exploits to a great
extent the extreme ranges of the keyboard and extends its colours almost to
orchestral proportions.
The Nocture is slow and quiet but rises in the middle to a very expressive,
dynamic climax which gradually returns to the mood of the beginning.
The last movement, Dance, bases its excitement not only on strong rhythmical
features but also on a great many changes in time signature which vary often
from the regular 6/8 and 9/8 to the irregular 5/8 and 7/8.
