Pianist Anton Kuerti, activist in many areas, became involved with
Greenpeace's Save the Whales campaign in the early 1980s. He asked
Morawetz if he could write a short piano composition for the book Whales: A
Celebration, which contained tributes to whales in many different art forms:
stories and poems, illustrations and paintings, as well as musical scores. The
book was published in 1983 by Prentice-Hall Canada. Kuerti premièred the piece
in the Toronto Glenn Gould Auditorium in 1993, and then a few months later at
the Parry Sound Festival of the Sound which he founded in 1980.
