Music is Profession, Recreation For Couple

The wife of an eminent Canadian composer, and herself a well-known accompanist, Mrs. Oskar Morawetz, says that she does not play her husband's compositions.

"They are too difficult" she laughed proud of the many honors her husband has received and that he is "Canada's most performed composer."

Mrs. Morawetz, the former Ruth Shipman of Toronto, is a bride of less than a month. At her June 7 wedding, a number of well-known Canadian musicians from eastern Canada were present and Dr. Ernesto Vinci played the wedding music.

TO BANFF

With her husband, Mrs. Morawetz is in Edmonton en route to the Banff School of Fine Arts, where she will be accompanist for the Banff opera productions of The Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro.

Dr. Morawetz, who will have some of his works performed by Lois Marshall when she tours Russia, will continue his own work while in Banff.

Mrs. Morawetz says that she feels a link with Edmonton, since at this time last year she was accompanying Miss Helen Schroter, soprano, at a concert at the Jubilee Auditorium. This will be the accompanist's third year at Banff Summer School, where for two years she has played for the ballet.

Although she has been "saturated" with classical music since a child, Mrs. Morawetz, also enjoys and plays Jazz and popular music.

Starting piano lessons at the age of eight, Mrs. Morawetz was awarded her ARCT when she was 17. In high school, she began studying music seriously, and won scholarships in music at the University of Western Ontario and at the Toronto Conservatory cf Music.

She met her husband at the Toronto Conservatory three years ago. He is a professor of the faculty of music of the University of Toronto.

"CREATES" MUSIC

With a good ear for music, Mrs. Morawetz can play by ear, creating a mood as she goes on. This enables her to improvise when playing for ballet, and makes it possible for her to play popular music.

Steeped in a highly musical background, with a musical husband, Mrs. Morawetz says that their life revolves around their work. "When we go out, we go to concerts."
